The Bioresource Processing Institute of Australia (BioPRIA) is an institute engaged in creating new industries and transforming established ones through education and research. Located within the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Monash University, BioPRIA is the offspring of the Australian Pulp and Paper Institute (APPI), which was established in 1989.
Our Mission:
To provide world-class technology based research, development and training enabling the sustainable innovation for a competitive Australian Bio-resource industry.
Our Vision:
- To foster the migration of the Australian pulp and paper industry into biorefineries and producers of high-value products.
Research directly contributes to the innovation required to develop high-value products complementary to the current one.
Training enables engineers and scientists to improve competitively by increasing product quality and process efficiency (cut cost) while promoting receptivity to innovation: new technology, new methods and new products. - To develop a competitive Australasian green economy.
- To align lignocellulosic products with the strong Australian sectors with expanding markets: Examples include food (super-hydrophobic paper for liquid packaging, oligosaccharides, hydrogels), biomedical (paper for blood tests and bio-diagnostics, biogel), construction materials (thin panels for insulation- energy, noise), energy (biofuel, biogas/cogeneration) and mining (paper filter for underground trucks.
- To develop value chains combining all the complementary industrial partners in the supply chains and the required scientific technical expertise.
- To work with multidisciplinary teams to resolve trans disciplinary projects and important challenges.
