HydroFrontiers unlocked $119M Prize

HydroFrontiers has been recognised as a Qualified Team in the $119 million XPRIZE Water Scarcity competition, a global initiative seeking breakthrough technologies to produce one million litres of clean drinking water per day from seawater — enough to support 10,000 people annually.

Led by Associate Professor Md. Arifur Rahim from Monash Chemical and Biological Engineering, HydroFrontiers has been selected for both Track A (Partial-System Demonstration) and Track B (Novel Materials and Methods).

“We are thrilled that HydroFrontiers has been recognised as a qualified team for this global competition on water scarcity,” said Associate Professor Rahim. “Our approach combines breakthrough materials innovation with scalable system design to make seawater desalination more sustainable, energy-efficient and cost-effective for communities worldwide.”

The team’s innovative approach integrates advanced materials with scalable system design to deliver energy-efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable desalination solutions for water-scarce communities worldwide.
