Director’s Message
A t BioPRIA, our mission is to drive knowledge and innovation to address the challenges faced by industry. We support researchers with expertise in biomass and bioresource materials, fostering collaboration between academia and industry to deliver impactful research outcomes. Our team brings together a wealth of multidisciplinary experience, strengthening BioPRIA’s research capabilities across diverse scientific and engineering domains.
BioPRIA has built a strong reputation for research excellence, demonstrated by competitive grants and strategic partnerships. Notably, we have led two major Industry Transformation Research Hubs (ITRHs): the Bioresource Advanced Manufacturing Initiative (BAMI) and Advanced Lignocellulosics Processing. Both hubs have played a critical role in advancing innovation within Australia’s pulp and paper sector.

Most recently, we secured $7 million in funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC) to establish the Training Centre in Sustainable Materials and Responsible Technologies for Packaging (SMaRT-Pack). This five-year initiative focuses on the full lifecycle of packaging—developing next-generation fibre-based materials, improving recycling and degradation technologies, and setting measurable standards to guide industry practices and regulation.
As part of our growth, BioPRIA have eight core research platforms:

Our staff at BioPRIA are deeply engaged in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and we remain committed to mentoring the next generation of researchers. At BioPRIA, we welcome new opportunities and challenges that push the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable materials and bioresource innovation.
“Together with our platforms, we reflect our commitment to evolving science, education and collaboration.
